December 11, 2010

Dear Parent / Guardian:

The next book report is due on the last day of January, 2011. If students wish to earn extra credit in Language Arts before the end of the second quarter, the book report should be turned in on the first week back from the Christmas break.
A FEW REMINDERS:
-Extra credit means: when ALL required academic work has been completed and turned in, the student wishes to do EXTRA work to help further reinforce skills. That is, extra credit means extra work; extra credit work cannot and will NOT replace required work!
-When a student resist in acquiring a routine of working on daily homework, the learning process is seriously interrupted and delayed causing a "dominoes effect" of total academic confusion for the student. Please continue to help your child by frequently checking his/her grades and homework online and encouraging and closely supervising his/her home-studies.
-When a parent states that the child has been working in his/her room daily for hours and is confounded by the fact that the child has earned a well below-average grade in a subject-area or two, my question is: what has the child been exactly working on for hours and hours in the room? Homework or on the computer games or on other types of internet connections???
-In regards to projects (Social Studies): the art-work is worth 20/100 AND the research work and report are worth 80/100. If you have observed your child working (w/classmates) on the Art for hours and days, does this mean that the child has earned an "A" grade? ABSOLUTELY NOT! Again, the art-work is worth 20% of the total grade. Please CHECK the project file folder containing the many fascinating pages of handwritten and printed-out notes & information, drafts of the report, drawings & sketches, written outline of the speech, the bibliography, and the final typewritten research report!
Happy Holidays & Good Wishes for 2011!

November 28, 2010

Dear Parent / Guardian:

During this holiday season, let us continue praying for the less fortunate and for God's continued worldwide care to especially the children, animals, and elderly.
I understand that we must all be very excited about the holidays; however, because of the vacation, this second quarter is shorter. Before the Christmas break, I will be sending home with the students mid-quarter progress reports. When we return from the break, I will be thinking about report card grades for the second quarter. Yes, time sure does fly by when you are having fun!
For those students who did not turn in an October book report about their book of choice for the month, I will be expecting a November book report this Tuesday. Extra book reports are a sure way of earning extra credit for Language Arts!
For grades 6 and 7, their French calendar project is due this week. Students were already provided about two weeks for this project.
For grade 7, a Language Arts project consisting of writing and acting out their own version of "A Christmas Carol" is due this Friday, December 3rd. A Social Studies project on a topic of our African studies is due the week of December 13th.
A reminder that grades earned on projects are the equivalent of exam grades. You may not have seen their Literature and History textbooks, but remember, research reports and projects require more work. Students were definitely provided class time; work is to be continued at home for homework.
We will be working on Origami Christmas cards soon (this week) to be sold before the Christmas break. I have purchased Origami green paper; please help with this fundraiser by sending with your child any left-over gift wrap paper or/and ribbon and other Art materials that we can use to create these cards.
Another reminder that I do not accept late work unless the student is absent. If a student does not write his/her name on the assignment, there is no way that I am able to credit an assignment without a name.

Saturday, November 6, 2010

TO: PARENTS / GUARDIANS OF GRADE SEVEN

We will be preparing for our major fundraiser soon after the Thanksgiving break. To create our attractive Origami Christmas cards, I would appreciate any donations of Art materials: left-over gift wrap paper, yarn, ribbon, glue, scotch tape, boxes of small candy canes. Traditionally, the seventh graders sold these cards for $1.00 each and usually this fundraiser has been a great success.
In Social Studies, the seventh graders are working on an African project, in small groups of three-four students. So far, the students forming their own small groups has not been a problem until recently. Therefore, in the very near future, I will be organizing the small groups for projects. If I notice students in a group not being productive with their work, I will need to separate these irresponsible ones and place them in a more responsible group of students.
The requirements are: daily note-taking from resources (books, online data, etc.), folder, drafts of the research report, final typewritten research report (minimum of three pages typewritten), final drafts of sketches and drawings and / or 3-D model(s), final draft of speech for final oral presentation. Grading: productive usage of class time, continued work at home, FINAL RESEARCH REPORT, cooperative group work, FOLDER containing all required papers=80%. The Art: drawings, sketches, posters, 3-D model(s)=20%.
DEADLINE: Monday, December 13th, 2010, ALL COMPLETELY DONE!!!
For the next few weeks, you may not notice your child's Social Studies textbook, BUT there is DEFINITELY Social Studies homework EVERYDAY!
I am very much concerned about a few students thinking that after the first quarter and after Parent-Teacher conferences, they no longer need to work on assignments thus failing exams. Parents/Guardians PLEASE, PLEASE check your child's academic progress online, on Option C, FREQUENTLY. A reminder that you can check daily homework (in my classes, remember, classwork becomes homework due the next day)and grades on Option C. Your child can DEFINITELY help you with this. Again, classwork turns into homework, is announced verbally several times per day, is written on the boards, AND is posted online.
Please continue to teach your child RESPONSIBILITY.

A reminder that I, Mrs. Owyang-Lee, do NOT accept late assignments with the exception of absences or special circumstances that were discussed between me and the parent at the beginning of this year.
If a student turns in incomplete work sloppily done, the "m" for missing will be recorded. Students should learn responsibility and respect for deadlines, or not? Homework supports and reinforces lessons taught and learned. If homework is not done on the day it was assigned, the learning process is interrupted and the lessons become more confusing for the student.
Nowadays, students are most fortunate with the additional help online. Yes, there are online tutors! The students are definitely well aware of the additional help online! Just refer to the first pages of the textbook for the websites!
Please continue to help support your child's success in education.
I am pleased to announce that Ms. Eva Coverson has helped us plan two field trips to the Asian Art Museum. The first one is scheduled for Tuesday, November 30th: Ancient China--Tombs and Temples; and the second one is scheduled for Thursday, January 27th: Spirit of the Samurai. The guided tour will begin at 9:45 a.m. and end at 11:30 a.m. The field trip permission notices have been sent home.
Thank you Eva!
Are there any suggestions for fundraisers to build the seventh grader's account? We are definitely going to have our traditional Christmas card sale, but should we have one before then? Please let my room parents know: Ms.Eva Coverson or/and Mrs. Marilyn Roque.
See you soon!
Mrs. Owyang-Lee

To: Parents / Guardians
From: Mrs. Sharon Owyang-Lee

For Grades 6 and 7
Re. Social Studies: Students have the option of using their textbooks to work on chapter exams; however, during the testing class period, students are not to re-read the chapter and spend time looking for the answers. They can use the textbook if a detail or two could support an explanation. The contents of the Social Studies exams consist of essay-type of questions assessing the student's overall comprehension of daily lessons, lectures, discussions, and assignments on chapter studies.
For the most part, everyday, there is an assignment for each subject area. Students are provided time during the class period to work on the assignment and are frequently reminded verbally, on the board, and online to COMPLETE the classwork for homework, which is due the next day.
For Grades 6, 7, and 8
Re. French: In order for students to better absorb the foreign language, I have instructed students to re-write their notes taken hurriedly in class. When I collect their French folders, notes and assignments are to be neatly written and well organized according to the dates. Grades earned on these folders will be the equivalent of test grades.
Re. Grade 7 Pre-Algebra: Students are to neatly and completely show each and every step of the work in order to earn full credit. If I receive a binder paper written with only answers, the "m" for missing will be clicked.
A reminder that I do not accept late work unless the student was absent. I am trying to teach students to respect deadlines and manage their work and time! In addition, by now, if students do not write their names on their assignments, the "m" for missing will be clicked and the assignment with no-name will be recycled. Looking for the owners of assignments with no-names is such a waste of precious class time; I would rather spend the time teaching. Again, I am trying to teach students RESPONSIBILITY. "There may be ten-thousand excuses but not one good reason".
Students are reminded frequently on a daily basis to complete and turn in ALL of their assignments. Please help your child by checking his / her homework and grades online. As in the Mission Dolores School handbook states: "The parents are the primary educators". Only by working together can we succeed in helping the students achieve their highest potential.

Tuesday, September 7, 2010

Dear Parent / Guardian:
Thank you so much for your generosity in donating the school supplies!
Please remind your child to always write his/her full name on all assignments along with the date, title of the lesson, and page numbers. I am unable to credit work without the above necessary and important information. Also, for Social Studies (grades 6 & 7), students are to re-read lessons on a daily basis. For French (grades 6, 7, and 8), students are to neatly re-write notes and assignments and organize these papers into their French folders. I will be collecting these folders every two weeks and grading them according to neat, complete, and well-organized notes with the equivalent of an exam grade. For grade 7, since the students were given the opportunity to borrow books from our school library, I will be expecting a book report by the last day of September.
By the way, is there a parent who is able to become my room-parent this year?
The job description is: planning for fundraisers and field trips. Let me know or/and send me a note with your child.
Again, if you have any comments or questions, please call the school; Rita is very good with immediately sending phone messages to the teachers. As you may already know, direct communication is best; avoid indirect dialogue which may lead to unnecessary gossip and bad feelings. Let's continue to focus on educating our children the best we can.

May 12, 2010 Renaissance letter to parents

May 12, 2010

Dear Parent / Guardian:

We are quickly approaching the date of our Renaissance Faire: Friday, May 21st.
Hopefully, your child has been busy at home with finalizing the project on the Renaissance. If possible, please check the following components of the project to assure completion:

--File Folder: appropriately designed and decorated, organized with dividers; notes, drafts of writing, sketches, final typewritten research report, bibliography

--Writing Journal / Notebook: recording of each day’s work and activities, dated

--Speech: organized and prepared

--Completed Artwork: display boards, posters, models

A reminder that the students were given about a month to work on their Renaissance
Projects; they will be earning a letter grade equivalent to an exam grade that will be recorded as credit for Social Studies and Language Arts (English, Reading, Spelling/Vocabulary).

On the day of the Renaissance Faire, the seventh graders will have their final fundraiser. Attached are a few ideas of Renaissance-type of recipes to make; you can also try google-searching other kinds of Renaissance-type of dishes that you are interested in baking to sell at our faire. If you are planning to help the seventh grade by baking goods, please send the items to school with your child that morning. If you are available to help supervise during the faire, the event is from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.; your presence will be most welcomed!

_____Yes! I will help with the fundraiser by donating the following items:

--paper cups_____

--paper plates_____

--plastic forks_____

Renaissance Faire Info

April 28, 2010
Dear Parent / Guardian:

Thanks to a few seventh grade student’s research online, the following information may help your child find an appropriate Renaissance costume for our Renaissance Faire
scheduled for Friday, May 21st from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Please call the establishment before making the trip there.

--American Conservatory Theatre (415) 439-2379
--American Mix (415) 673-7454
--American Rag Clothing (415) 474-4553
--Costumes on Haight (415) 621-1356
735 Haight Street, S.F., CA 94117

If you and your child do not wish to rent a costume, you could help your child create a Renaissance-looking outfit with clothing that you already have.

A reminder that having a fundraiser on the day of the Renaissance Faire could help add to the seventh grader’s account. Again, thanks to a few seventh grader’s research online, simple desserts seemed to be favorites during the European Renaissance period: shortbread cookies, lemon pound cake, fruit tarts, and apple cider. If you could possibly make and donate these food items on the morning of the event, the students would be most grateful for your help and contribution.

The students are working on their Renaissance projects and may not be using their Social Studies textbook for the next few weeks; please closely supervise your child’s daily work on his / her Renaissance project which will be worth the equivalent of two exam grades in Social Studies for the fourth quarter. We had already discussed in class the requirements and assessments. Hope to see you at the Renaissance Faire!

Grade 7 in-class PTO meeting

Easter Egg Fundraiser earned $273.00!

Tuesday, April 27th—field trip to the Asian Art Museum
Program title: Ancient China: Tombs and Temples
Begins at 9:45 a.m.; we will leave school at 8:45 a.m. and return to school for lunch. We need six adult chaperones.

Renaissance Faire is scheduled for Friday, May 21st, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The St. Andrew’s Guild was already invited to join us that day. Understand that the members of the Guild must take the time to dress for the occasion and travel long distance to enrich us with their expert knowledge of the European Renaissance. Each student in the school should donate $1.00 to express a token of appreciation.

Please help your child by creating and/or finding a Renaissance-looking costume. Parent helpers are most welcome; we could have a fundraiser during this event in the auditorium selling Renaissance-type of refreshments: shortbread cookies, apple cider, and other baked goods related to the Renaissance. Please refer to online ideas under Renaissance cuisine or recipes.

For the next few weeks, the courses of Social Studies and Language Arts will be integrated. For example, Social Studies key terms will also be credited for Spelling & Vocabulary; reading and comprehension of the lessons will be credited for both Social Studies and Language Arts.

Preparations leading to the Renaissance Faire: please assist your child by helping to gather resources for the Social Studies projects on the Renaissance-- at the library, book stores, online. Art materials will be needed: display boards, poster boards, paint, brushes, new markers, and 3-D models, dioramas, etc.

Graduation reception: we will need help from parents to set-up the auditorium, serve refreshments, and clean-up. Ms. Michelle Holcomb, our room parent, will help in organizing the help needed for the reception. Remember, your child will be enjoying the graduation reception that will be organized by the upcoming seventh graders!

Date of graduation: Friday, May 28th at 5:00 p.m.
Reception in the auditorium: 6:00-7:00 p.m. (approximately).

A reminder that there is definitely HOMEWORK EVERYDAY ESPECIALLY IN MATH! Students are very familiar with the Math Tutor programs online. Reviewing the math lesson on a daily basis is crucial to understanding more complex math standards.

Please help your child by encouraging him / her to review math lessons by re-reading textbook explanations, examples, and using the Math Tutor program frequently.

March 25, 2010

Dear Parent / Guardian:

Here is a list of the major events for the rest of this academic year!

On Tuesday, April 27th, the seventh graders are attending a guided tour of Ancient China: Tombs and Temples at the Asian Art Museum. Many thanks to Ms. Michelle Holcomb, our room parent, for planning and scheduling this field trip! We will need one chaperone for every ten students; that is, a minimum of three parent chaperones. The program begins at 9:45 a.m. and ends at 11:30 a.m. We will leave the school grounds by 9:00 a.m. and return to school in time for lunch.

On Friday, May 21st, the seventh grade will host a Renaissance Faire in the school auditorium from 9:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The entire student body will attend this event. Before the faire, the students will be working on their Renaissance projects. Please help your child by assisting him / her to the library to continue researching their particular topic on the European Renaissance; and by gathering art materials for the art section of the project. Donations of art supplies are always gladly welcomed!

On the day of the Renaissance Faire, refreshments, baked goods (not so sugary) and apple cider, could be sold to further help increase the seventh grader’s account. Again, we are asking for parent help on that day. The St. Andrew’s Guild, an organization consisting of adults enthusiastic about the European Renaissance, will be our visitors for the day. They will come dressed as Renaissance characters and share their expertise on their particular area of interest. The members of the St. Andrew’s Guild are taking time and effort to come and enrich our Renaissance Faire; each student is to donate $1.00 to express a token of appreciation.

In order to add to the Renaissance Faire atmosphere, if possible, the students are to dress in Renaissance style. I have a few costumes to lend, although sizing is limited and they may need to be dry-cleaned, since they were in storage from last year. Students in the past have borrowed costumes from stores, created a Renaissance style from what they already have at home, and / or borrowed from friends and family. If you have suggestions, please share your ideas with us!

On Friday, May 28th, our eighth graders are graduating! The evening graduation mass is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. The seventh graders are responsible for the graduation reception in the school auditorium from 8:00-9:00 p.m. (approximately). We will need parent helpers to prepare, serve refreshments, and clean-up. The reception for your own child’s graduation next year will hopefully be as supported and festive. The cost of the graduation breakfast occurring before graduation and the graduation reception will be deducted from the seventh grade account. Due to the help from parents, the seventh graders should be able to cover the costs. The need for fundraisers and parent involvement was mentioned at the back-to-school PTO meeting and reminded at PTO in-class meetings during the academic year.

March Newsletter

March 02, 2010

Dear Parent / Guardian:

We have a very busy schedule planned for the month of March!

In regards to a fundraiser idea to celebrate the season of Easter, a few students suggested a sale of plastic colored Easter egg containers (sold at drugstores, Safeway, or/and Target?) filled with miniature, foil wrapped, chocolate Easter eggs; to be sold for $1.50(?). I did introduce this idea at the last in-class PTO meeting and the parents present did not disagree with this fundraiser idea. Could you possibly help by donating these plastic Easter egg containers or / and small goodies (candy) to place inside them? If your answer is “yes”, then please send these materials with your child to school as soon as possible. We should be able to sell these items before the Easter vacation.

Our last field trip to Good Tidings Art Studio is scheduled for Tuesday, March 16th, from 8:40 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. (includes transportation from and return to school).

I am also excited about another upcoming field trip to Japantown (since we are studying Japan in Social Studies). This field trip includes a free guided tour of the Japantown area. A volunteer will be conducting the tour; I am asking that a $1.00 donation from each student be presented to the Japanese organization as our gesture of gratitude. The field trip to Japantown is scheduled for Thursday, March 11th; we will leave school at 9:00 a.m.and return to school at 1:00 p.m. (approximately). More parent-chaperones would really help make the trip more enjoyable!

Ms. Coreen Abbott, an Art Instructor from the Museo-Italiano, is coming to visit and teach the seventh graders about the Italian Renaissance and have the students work on an elaborate Art project. Again, to express our gratitude for Ms. Abbott’s time, art materials, and instruction for the two-three days, please provide a donation of $1.00.

Looking forward to seeing you during the Parent-Teacher conference week!

Sincerely,
